Spain – Non-Lucrative Visa

If you are thinking of moving to Spain for retirement purposes, the non-lucrative residency is the most suitable option. This visa grants residency rights to foreigners in Spain. It is intended for retirees, investors, and remote or independent workers. This visa does not allow you to work in Spain and requires proof of sufficient financial means to support yourself and, if applicable, your family.

The initial duration of this visa is 90 days. However, your one-year residence permit is simultaneously processed along with your application for a visa.

Requirements

You must not have a criminal record
Your country of origin must issue you with a visa to show that you are in Spain in a legal capacity
You must have a medical insurance policy in place to cover your time in Spain
Your family must have a place of residence in Spain

Investments

You must have adequate financial means to cover the costs of living in Spain for the initial year of the residence permit, or a regular source of income to support you and accompanying family members. This must be at least 400% of Spain’s Public Multiple Effects Income Indicator (IPREM). For each family dependant, you must calculate 100% of the IPREM.

Application Process

Step 1

Apply for non-lucrative residency at a Spanish consulate in the country of your current residence, using the model form Ex 01.

You must present the following documents for you and any accompanying family members:

A valid passport

Police certificate showing that you don’t have a criminal record

Evidence of sufficient economic funds

Proof of medical insurance

Step 2

Wait for a response from the government

Can take up to three months

Step 3

Collect the visa

Step 4

Enter Spain

Step 5

Apply for the foreigners’ identity card at the Immigration Office. You must pay a visa fee equivalent to 80 euros. If you’re an American, Australian, Bangladeshi, British, and Canadian national, the rate will differ for reasons of reciprocity.
The relevant consulate will be able to confirm the amount for you.

In addition, you will need to present the following documents:

A valid passport

Three recent passport-sized photographs

Residency permit

Proof of payment of the required fees

Social security number

Step 6

Receive the foreigners’ identity card.

You must carry this card with you at all times during your stay in Spain.
