Portugal allows dual citizenship with most countries, so you may not have to renounce your original nationality.

How to obtain Portuguese citizenship

There are four options for applying for Portuguese nationality.

Nationality by origin

Nationality by Sephardic origin

Nationality by investment

Nationality by marriage

Nationality by origin:

The children of Portuguese parents, born in Portugal or abroad, are entitled to Portuguese nationality by origin. Likewise, Portuguese grandchildren who have an effective link with the Portuguese community are entitled to Portuguese nationality by origin.

Nationality by Sephardic origin:

Descendants of Sephardic Jews may obtain Portuguese nationality, without the need to reside in Portugal or even master the Portuguese language.

Nationality by investment:

Citizens from countries outside the European Union who obtain a residence permit in Portugal by means of investment may apply for Portuguese nationality after 5 years of effective residence in the country, that is, at least 7 days per year in the 5 years prior to the application.

Nationality by marriage:

Foreigners who are married to or have been in a de facto union with a Portuguese citizen for at least three years may obtain Portuguese nationality, provided that there is no opposition, and that they are not divorced or separated.
