Which are the best countries for teleworking?

Many countries in Europe have adapted to the change limited mobility has brough about due to the pandemic and in response and companies now offer full-time remote work. Several countries in Europe have launched or are launching new visas designed specifically for remote workers.  Digital nomad visas are now available or will be available in Greece, Malta, Portugal and Spain, best countries for teleworking.

Teleworking in Greece

Greece has a program specifically aimed at digital nomads called “Work from Paradise.”  Work is in progress to extend the 5G network to cover the whole island and the government is promoting Crete as the ideal city for remote workers. The new digital nomad visa Greece is valid for a period of up to 12 months.  Before it expires, the holder can apply for a digital nomad residence permit to stay longer. The applicant only needs to provide proof of an income of at least €3,500 per month.

Teleworking in Malta

Malta was the first European Union country to have a nationwide 5G network.  English is one of Malta’s official languages, making the country a good choice for English-speaking digital nomads.  The Malta digital visa is valid for one year and can be renewed.  The applicant for a digital nomad visa Malta must show proof of vaccination against Covid-19 and take out health insurance.

Teleworking in Portugal

While Portugal does not yet have a digital nomad visa, Lisbon has been voted one of the best eight cities in Europe for digital nomads.  Interested freelancers and entrepreneurs may apply for a temporary resident visa that will allow the holder to stay in Portugal for more than one year and can be extended.  This type of visa can also be used as a path to permanent residency.

Madeira in particular, has launched as “Madeira Digital Nomads” project.  Participants will be able to live at the Nomad Village in Ponta del Sol built especially for remote workers and can choose to live in independent villas or stay in a hotel and enjoy free WI-FI connection, co-working stations and special events.

Teleworking in Spain

Spain plans to introduce their digital nomad visa in May 2023.  The digital visa Spain will allow remote workers to live and work in Spain for a maximum period of 6 months without having to officially register.  Spain’s digital nomad visa is expected to help attract more foreign workers into Spain particularly to rural areas that have been affected by depopulation.  Madrid has been voted one of the best eight cities in Europe for digital nomads.
